Psalm 98:1 O sing to the LORD a new song, For He has done wonderful things
Psalms 33:3 Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy.
It’s fun to look back at all the songs that have been sung in church since the “contemporary” movement started 10+ years ago. For example, Trading My Sorrows, Lord I Lift Your Name On High, Here I Am To Worship, The Heart of Worship, Come Now Is The Time To Worship, and many others. Some of these are still good today, but some are better left locked up in a vault somewhere. I love the new songs that we sing on a regular basis now, but I miss some of the old ones.
So, I’d love to have your help. What old songs are still “useable” and relevant in 2009. What old songs, in your opinion, are fine to never be used again? I would love to know your opinion!

Comment by Travis Wright July 7, 2009 @ 10:38 amWhen He rolls up His sleeves
He ain’t just putting on the ritz
(Our God is an awesome God)
There’s thunder in His footsteps
And lightning in His fists
(Our God is an awesome God)
And the Lord wasn’t joking
When He kicked ‘em out of Eden
It wasn’t for no reason
That He shed His blood
His return is very close
And so you better be believing that
Our God is an awesome God
come ON rich mullins… seriously?
Comment by asian July 7, 2009 @ 10:42 ambetter be believing in god or else he is gonna go gorilla stomping on your face.
I like the challenge of revamping old songs to make them more relevant to our culture today. So, I’m willing to do any old song as long as the lyrical content is Biblical.
Comment by grubbs July 7, 2009 @ 10:54 amcan you “revamp” Trading My Sorrows? yes Lord yes Lord yes yes Lord, yes Lord yes Lord yes yes Lord
Comment by Travis Wright July 7, 2009 @ 10:59 amand i would love to see where in the scriptures teaches us the concept of trading our sorrows for anything.
Comment by asian July 7, 2009 @ 11:00 amJeremiah 31:13
Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.
Sorry, gotta defend trading sorrows. Not a fan of the song, though.

Comment by asian July 7, 2009 @ 11:29 amI’ve been to churches/talked with worship leaders who felt that hymns either didn’t have a place in “contemporary worship” at all or unless they have contemporized (sure its a word!) it. I think that at times, hymns are perfectly fine they way they were written originally, but that a lot of people are repulsed by how old sounding they are. What do you think?
Comment by katiembrewer July 7, 2009 @ 11:33 ami think that a lot of hymns have a place in “contemporary worship” just as they are with no changes at all. sometimes lyrically, things can get confusing b/c we don’t speak that way anymore…i.e “naught be all else to me save that thou art.” i love “be thou my vision” but the language makes you think a little bit harder about what the words are really saying. one of my favorite hymns though and we hardly changed it at all when we did it a couple of weeks ago.
Comment by Travis Wright July 7, 2009 @ 11:45 amStill Good:
Prince of Peace (You are Holy)
Yearn
You Said
Face Down
No Good:
Hallelujah (Your Love Makes me Sing)
I also like a lot of RUF songs where they take hymns but give them more contemporary music. You can get a lot of demos and guitar music at the site below (link to the hymnbook). They also have professional recordings of a lot of the songs that are really good.
Comment by brady July 7, 2009 @ 2:10 pmSome of these are better than others.

I love You Said, and Face Down (if you’re talking about the matt redman song). I also loved Hallelujah. I am not familiar with RUF stuff, but I’ll check it out.
